Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment based on the use of essential oils. These essential oils are derived from different parts of a plant and are therefore therapeutic and aromatic in nature. Rosemary oil is one such essential oil used often in aromatherapy.
Rosemary oil is extracted from the flowering tops as well as the leaves of the rosemary herb using steam distillation. Therefore, this herb yields quite a high amount of oil. Rosemary oil is a powerful stimulating oil and blends well with other refreshing oils such as peppermint and geranium.
Given its revitalizing effects, rosemary oil can be used best in candle burners or diffusers. Through this method, the minute oil molecules enter the body easily upon inhalation and can act instantly on the nervous system. Rosemary oil has a pronounced action on the brain and is therefore wonderful for clearing the mind and improving mental awareness. It restores vitality and invigorates the nervous system and is thus a good remedy for depression and mental fatigue.
Adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil to warm water and inhaling this steam is useful for respiratory conditions. There are several compounds in this oil that can help alleviate symptoms of cold and loosen any chest congestion. Since rosemary oil is antiseptic, it is effective for providing relief against respiratory infections as well.
Rosemary essential oil should be massaged onto the skin along with a carrier oil like almond or olive oil. It is anti-spasmodic in nature and can relieve excessive contractions in the muscles and joints. It is used extensively against cramps, sore muscles and headaches. Vapour baths with rosemary oil are found to be effective for rheumatism and arthritis.
This oil has astringent properties as well and is useful for skin care. The oil helps in toning your skin, encouraging dry skin to produce oil but controlling greasiness in oily skin at the same time. Mix few drops of this oil in a bowl of water before applying it to the skin.
Rosemary essential oil can be used for head massages as well. This is because it helps in stimulating hair follicles due to which the hair texture improves and becomes stronger. This massaging is also beneficial for dry and flaky scalps. It is also believed that rosemary oil can slow down premature hair loss and greying of hair.
Overuse of this oil could result in adverse reactions such as nervous twitches or muscle spasms. Thus, this oil should be used with caution. Moreover, take care while using this essential oil as it is potentially toxic if ingested.
