Do aromatherapy candles really relax you?
Like any other form of alternative medicine, Aromatherapy too has its fair share of naysayers and non believers. Of course, there’s little scientific evidence to show that Aromatherapy works effectively, but those that use it swear by it. Lighting up an aromatherapy candle or two can be a great way to help you relax.
When you light up an aromatherapy candle, it slowly releases tiny quantities of essential oils into the air. These tiny molecules diffuse into the air around you, and as you breathe, they find their way into your body. The chemicals have a certain effect on your body, depending on the kind of oil the candle was anointed with. Most oils have some sort of relaxing or mood-enhancing qualities; some more than others.
Aromatherapy Candles that contain lavender, sandalwood, or chamomile oils are very popular. All of these plants have a naturally calming effect. Just think about smelling a real sandalwood plant or drinking chamomile tea. Surprisingly, even lemon oil has very powerful calming qualities. Fortunately, you don’t need to know what oils are helpful as most aromatherapy candles are sold with a label that says they’ll help you relax, and are made up of a combination of different oils.
Even if you don’t believe in Aromatherapy, there’s no harm in trying it. Sometimes, it’s more than the scent that comes from the candles that calms you; it’s the whole procedure that has a relaxing and calming effect. The next time you have a really hectic day at work, try opening some relaxing candles and lighting them in your room. You’ll find that the action of lighting the candles themselves makes you less tense. The soft, warm lighting that the candles create in your room will help you to relax. Take a few deep breaths and you’ll realise that the candles have made you do something you’ve lost touch with through your hectic day—breathe!
Keep in mind that you shouldn’t use low quality Aromatherapy candles. These candles are made from paraffin and the soot released by them will irritate your throat. Bear in mind that sometimes the effects of these things are psychological. A flip side of this is that you may find yourself psychologically addicted to these candles. Remember that you should be able to relax without them too. If you need them all the time, it is wiser to take stock of your lifestyle.
